The Kern-Hayon Fund was set up in the early 2000s to endow the Caring Committee of Congregation Albert. This Committee plays a pivotal and critical role in the lives of our congregation. In the spirit of tikkun olam and, following the mitzvah of gemilut hasadim (acts of loving kindness), the Committee’s primary objective is to reach out to congregants who are ill, bereaved, homebound, isolated, or undergoing other difficult life transitions.
These are the activities that we perform:
- Soup and challah delivery (click here for Caring Committee soup recipes)
- Bereavement materials after death, shloshim and Yahrzeit, as well as challah delivery (click here for a list of resources for people who are grieving)
- Homebound visits and soup and challah delivery
- Handwritten notes to congregants and donors
- Holiday gift baskets (some holidays in conjunction with the Jewish Care Program)
- Education Day with speakers and luncheon to thank our volunteers
- Medical equipment loans (click here to see our current inventory)
The Caring Committee relies on volunteers to perform our mission. Our volunteers make soup, visit the homebound and make deliveries. The pre-school children also volunteer by decorating delivery bags and cards for the congregants that receive our services.
If you know of somebody who needs our services, or wants to volunteer or be part of the committee, please email Joyce Phillips at JPhillips@salud.unm.edu.
