Volunteers Needed for Cancer Services of New Mexico

If you are interested in volunteering 3 hours a month (just one evening, once a month), in the area of law, healthcare, finance, insurance or other paperwork issues, to help cancer patients & survivors, and their families navigate the often difficult task of working through healthcare policies and maintaing homes during treatment, please contact Rachel Brookins at youth@congregationalbert.org.  With enough volunteer members we can coordinate a training to be held here at CA.  Thank you in advance!

"LIPA"
Legal, Insurance, and Paperwork Assistance Program

Many cancer patients and their loved ones are overwhelmed by the complex legal and insurance issues assocated with the treatment and survival process. They also need better tools for managing the huge volume of medical and insurance paperwork associated with a cancer diagnosis.

Cancer Services of New Mexico's free Legal, Insurance, & Paperwork Assistance (LIPA) Program is the only program in New Mexico providing comprehensive assistance with cancer-related legal, insurance, and paperwork issues, and is one of few programs in the U.S. focused on these issues. Services are available at no charge to any New Mexican coping with cancer who needs assistance.

The LIPA program has four major elements:

  • LIPA Clinics - Volunteers with expertise in insurance, medical coverage, disability, legal, financial, and paperwork issues are available for personal consultations in-person or by phone.
  • LIPA Referral Program - We provide referrals to a variety of other groups that assist cancer patients and their loved ones with LIPA-related issues.
  • Cancer Treatment Organizers - This free 13-pocket organizing tool designed by a New Mexican cancer survivor can help you organize all of your cancer-related paperwork.
  • LIPA Website (www.nmcancerhelp.org) - Our LIPA website provides links to a wealth of resources to assist you with legal, insurance, and financial issues, along with other resources for cancer patients and their loved ones.

The LIPA program is provided at no cost to NM's cancer patients/survivors and their family members/loved ones. For more information, please go to our LIPA website, www.nmcancerhelp.org, or contact us.

Flexibility, the New F Word

If there’s one new sleight-of-hand term we’ve learned in the past few months, it’s “flexibility.” Last week, flexibility gained a new meaning, as the House of Representatives passed the so-called Working Families Flexibility Act of 2013. Flexibility in this bill, though, actually means less flexibility, less choice, less time and less money for working families. [...]

Iranian Elections Taking Shape

On June 14, Iranians will go to the polls to elect their next president. While the world watches to see what course the next Iranian government will take, we at the RAC thought that it might be helpful to break down the Iranian election in advance of the vote. While the president of a country [...]

Another Victory!

Talk radio is very popular in Israel. Animated debates on every topic under the sun fill the airwaves every day. One station, Kol BaRama, a station with a large Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) listenership, has the practice of not allowing women to speak on air. They say this is to respect the feelings of all who tune [...]

Immigration Call In Day Tomorrow!

In this week’s Torah portion, we are exposed to one of the Torah’s more troubling stories. Miriam, who has been a character around which the Israelites have gathered and rallied through the exodus from Egypt, speaks poorly of her brother Moses. As a result, Miriam is cursed with leprosy. While there are many problematic elements [...]

State Department Halts 3D Printed Guns: Too Late?

Back in September, we blogged about the scary prospects of 3D printed weapons. Fast forward eight months: the first fully printed weapon works, and its designs have been posted and can be downloaded for free over the Internet. Although the State Department moved quickly to shut down the host-site, the ready-to-print and fully functional design [...]
