HAVURAH HAPPENING:
APRIL 14, 2002 AT 7:00 PM The Havurah Program at Congregation Albert |
What is a Havurah?
The word Havurah
(pluralHavurot) comes from the Hebrew word
Haver, which means friend. The formation of a Havurah
group is an opportunity to develop life-long friendships with
congregants who have similar interests. Each Havurah is a small
community of congregants who meet on a regular basis to offer one
another social support and to pursue self-directed programs of
Jewish study, celebration and/or community service. Participation
in a Havurah group is intended to supplement, not replace, the
spiritual, social and intellectual activities provided by our
congregation. Havurah membership is an extension and privilege of
Temple membership; you must be a member in good standing in order
to participate.
Goals of a Havurah:
How Large is Each Havurah and Who is Involved?
The size of a group is up to each individual Havurah. As a guideline, each group consists of about 12 or as many as 20 individuals. Groups are formed by the Havurah Committee initially, based upon your response to the attached application. An attempt will be made to form groups with similar interests. Again, as a guideline, there will be groups comprised solely of young families or people of different ages or members who prefer their own age groups. There may be groups who prefer intellectual study over theological study and vice versa. There will be schmoozing groups and eating groups. In other words, there will be a group for everyone.

Who
Runs the Havurah? Each Havurah is self-governed and sets its own rules and agenda. Congregation Alberts Havurah Committee is available as a resource, but does not direct activities. The members of the Havurah chart the direction of their group. Each group should have a contact person so that the committee can follow up as needed. |
Where and When Will the Havurah Meet?
This is entirely up to the members of each Havurah. Generally, each group will meet once a month at the house of one of the members. Some groups may choose to meet more frequently or less frequently. Meeting locations should be rotated among different homes, although members may occasionally choose alternate locations for a specific activity. The day, time, and place of the meetings is determined by each group.
