Betty began her career as a teacher working and living in Africa and Pakistan. Prior to returning to the Unites States, she traveled extensively through the Indian subcontinent, including Afghanistan, as a photojournalist.
She returned to the United States and after receiving an engineering degree was assigned by IBM to Stockholm, Sweden, to work in R&D.
After six years she returned to the US, obtained a graduate degree in journalism and went on assignment to Beijing, China, where for seven years, she worked as a journalist and in various capacities at the American Embassy.
After 34 years mostly working overseas, she returned to Albuquerque in 2001. Today she is semi-retired and is working at Presbyterian Healthcare Services in Strategy and Customer Relations. She holds degrees in fine arts, laser electro-optics and journalism.
Betty joined Congregation Albert in 2001 and on July 1, 2011, began her term as president of the board of trustees. On July 1, 2010, she began a two-year term as president of the FBI Citizens’ Academy Alumni Association and also serves as president of her neighborhood association.
Having spent most of her working career overseas, she was involved with Jewish communities in all the countries in which she has lived. Her last involvement was with the Jewish community in Beijing, China, made-up of expatriates from Europe, North and South America and Israel.

Arlene graduated from Skidmore College. She married Ira in 1959, and was a Navy Wife for 18 years. She was active in community theatre in California, Texas, Hawaii and Virginia. She started her business career as a Benefits Specialist, and was subsequently promoted to Director of Human Resources at a NYSE-listed corporation.
Arlene and Ira moved to Albuquerque in 1996. They have been members of Congregation Albert for six years. Arlene has been active on the New Member Committee for five years and on the Personnel Committee for three.

Judy and her partner of fifteen years, Alice Silverstein, have been members of the Congregation for about four years, ever since Judy’s conversion. Judy works now as an accountant, helping small businesses manage their finances. She worked previously as a product group manager for Oracle Corporation, a very large software company. Before her work at Oracle, she served for a number years as the finance director and treasurer for the city of Springfield, Oregon—a city of about the size of Las Cruces. Judy also worked as the controller for a Cadillac and Airstream dealership, a bookkeeper, a bank teller, a cocktail waitress, a post office mail sorter, and a car hop. Judy has been helping with IHN, Project Share, challah baking, the Sisterhood book sale, and the CA Bulletin. She loves to read and to get dirty in the garden.

Art and his wife Kathryn Ellis have been part of the Congregation Albert community since moving to New Mexico from California in 2003. Art is outgoing president of the Congregation Albert Brotherhood and is also an advisor with the Jewish Community Endowment Fund representing CA on that board. Art is Chairman of the Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful public advisory board and has been with that organization for six years. Art is employed as Director of Finance and Facilities at a local charter high school while Kathy is manager of two High Country Garden retail nurseries in the Albuquerque area. They have two grandchildren ages 2 and 6 months. Their previous temple was Congregation Shir Hadash in Los Gatos, California. Art was previously a board of trustee’s member and president of the brotherhood at Shir Hadash.

Marcia was born and raised in Milwaukee Wisconsin and has lived in Albuquerque for 45 years with her husband Larry. They have two married children and four fantastic grandchildren. Her family has been affiliated with Congregation Albert for 45 years and has celebrated many simchas in the temple. She has been on the board of trustees since 2006, serving on various committees; and has been president of the Board of Trustees this past year. She is a retired employment law attorney and loves retirement. She has served on the board of Jewish Family Services, All Faiths Receiving Home, CA Sisterhood, and the City of Albuquerque Personnel Board.

Louis was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico and has lived in NM all of his life. He moved to Albuquerque in 1977 with his wife, Barbara, and they have been members of Congregation Albert since 1978. Barbara and Louis have been married for 40 years and have two sons, Joel and Eric. Louis received a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma and a Law Degree from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. He practiced real estate, corporate, and business law for 33 years and recently retired from the private law practice. He is currently providing mediation services in litigated and non-litigated cases. He has served on Congregation Albert’s Board of Trustees for a number of years; and served as Brotherhood President for 2 years. He has also served on the membership committee and the Interim Rabbi Search committee.

Dr. Janet Gaines has been a member of Congregation Albert since 1980. She served as chair of the Education Committee and taught Hebrew School, Religious School, and Adult Education for ten years. She teaches part-time at UNM, specializing in the Bible and Jewish Literature, and has published several books and articles on biblical subjects. Janet was Executive Director of Hillel on campus and won the 2009 UNM Outstanding Teacher Award. She also served on the Jewish Federation and NM Rape Crisis Center Boards and is currently on the U.S. Post Office Advisory Board for New Mexico and the Navajo Nation. Her husband, Barry, is a past President of the congregation. The couple has two adult children.

Debbie, originally from Sioux City, Iowa, has a degree in speech/language pathology and audiology. She and Jay, her husband of 34 years, lived in San Francisco, where Jay practiced dentistry and Debbie was the office manager. In 2000, they retired and moved to Arizona, where Debbie sold residential real estate in Scottsdale. Three years ago, they made the move to Albuquerque and joined Congregation Albert. Debbie has been involved with various volunteer projects in the community. They are thrilled to have their children, Rachel and Adam (married to Heather), also living in Albuquerque. Adam and Heather have a three-year-old daughter, Ahava.

Kim and John Hooker have been members of Congregation Albert since 1992. Their children, Eleanor, Ben, and Theo have attended Congregation Albert Religious School. Theo will be called to the Torah as Bar Mitzvah in 2009. Kim is a Principal/Architect with Studio Southwest Architects and Treasurer of the US Green Building Council New Mexico Chapter. Kim’s board goals are library, senior and facility issues.

Greg W. Levenson was born in Albuquerque, NM in 1978. He is a graduate of Lubbock High School, Lubbock TX and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication Studies from the University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Arts Degree in National Security Studies from the American Military University, a Master of Business Administration Degree from Georgetown University, and a Master of Business Administration from ESADE University in Barcelona, Spain.
The Bank of Las Vegas named Greg as a Vice President and Loan Officer in 2000 and he has remained with the Bank since that time. He was named President of The Bank of Las Vegas in late 2001 and took on the additional role of Chief Executive Officer in 2008. He is also an officer and pilot in the New Mexico Air National Guard where he flew the F-16 Fighting Falcon for six years including a combat tour in Iraq in 2007.
Mr. Levenson is an active participant in the New Mexico Independent Community Bankers Association, is on the steering committee of Bank of New Mexico, a Federal Reserve sponsored entity seeking to address the needs of the underbanked of New Mexico, an advisory council member of the Annette Strauss Institute at the University of Texas, and he is a member of the Board of Directors of New Mexico Appleseed.
Greg and his wife Shana, are members of Congregation Albert in Albuquerque, NM and have two children.

Marisa Lipscher moved to Albuquerque from the New York area last summer. She and her husband, Randy Lipscher M.D., have two children; Raine, a sixth grader at Desert Ridge Middle School and Aiden Storm, a second grader at Solomon Schechter Day School. Marisa graduated magna cum laude from the University of Rochester in 1997. She worked as a marketer for Dell Computer Corporation, and then as a Director of Marketing for an award-winning medical software company until it was sold in 2008. Since arriving in Albuquerque, Marisa has been designing the corporate branding and marketing campaign for a start-up technology company (LookingNew.com). She and her family joined Congregation Albert right after their arrival in town.

A native of St. Louis, Ralph moved with his family to Albuquerque in 1998, and has been a member of Congregation Albert ever since. He is employed as an internist with Presbyterian Medical Group. He has served on the Board of Trustees at Presbyterian Medical Group and was a member of the Board at Solomon Schechter Day School.

Gary and his wife, Debbie Friedman, have been members of Congregation Albert since they moved to Albuquerque in 1991 with their son Garth. Garth still resides in Albuquerque with his wife and two small children, Alyssa and Wyatt. Gary received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Arizona State University, has held senior leadership positions in Supply Chain Management with Fortune 100 companies, and is a consultant in Lean and Supply Chain Management. His hobby job is designing and building custom homes. Gary is looking forward to serving as a Trustee for the Temple.

Ron is an Albuquerque native and a long-time member of Congregation Albert. Ron has been a trial lawyer with Sutin, Thayer & Browne since 1972. He has served as New Mexico Regional Chair of the Anti-Defamation League and as president of Hillel at the University of New Mexico, and as a member of the boards of the Jewish Community Endowment Foundation, the Jewish Federation of Greater Albuquerque, and other local non-profit organizations. Ron’s wife Meryl is currently serving as president of the Ronald Gardenswartz Jewish Community Center of Greater Albuquerque. Their son Neil will be an entering freshman at the University of Arizona this fall.

Stuart is married and has two grown children that live in Colorado and Pennsylvania. He earned a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering at New York University, served as an Army officer in Vietnam, and retired after 33 years of service as a civilian in Research and Development of Aircraft systems with the US Navy. Following his retirement he worked as a Senior Corporate consultant with L-3 Communications for 10 years. He has served as a member of the Board and the Executive Board at Temple Judea of Bucks County. He was also actively involved in the Chevrat Torah group at Shir Ami in Newtown, Pennsylvania. He and his wife relocated in 2007 to Albuquerque to retire here. He currently serves as chairman of the Congregation Albert Technology Committee. In addition, he volunteers with the Bernalillo County Emergency Management Office, Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Jewish Family Services Food Bank. His hobbies are Amateur Radio and Woodturning.

Scott Steinberg has been a member of Congregation Albert since 1989. Scott attended UNM and operates a successful business. He and his wife Robin have been married for 29 years and are the proud parents of two grown children, Marc and Sarah. Scott and his wife are both active in congregational life.

Ron is a native of Albuquerque. After undergrad studies at Berkeley, Ron received his law degree from UNM. After law school, he served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the far south eastern reaches of Venezuela for over two years, and he then worked on ships all over the Pacific for a year. Finally, he decided it was time to settle down and began law practice in Albuquerque, where he has been in private law practice for over thirty-seven years. Ron is married to Karen who is a nurse and they have three grown children, Leah who lives in Denver, Dorian who lives in Seattle, and Ben who is completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin. This is Ron’s second stint on the Congregation Albert Board.
