Congregation Albert Sisterhood - February 2006

Communication, global and local

In the story of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11), everyone on earth spoke the same language and used the same words. The people of Shinar then decided to build a tower reaching high into the sky "to make a name for" themselves. The Lord, not liking this form of self-aggrandizement, determined that if people acted this way with one language, he would confound their speech so they could not understand each other, and scatter them over the earth.

In today's world, communication can be difficult even when we speak the same language. Making sure that the message sent is the same as the message received can be challenging. A second dilemma in our fast paced environment is getting the message out quickly and efficiently.

Sisterhood wants to become quicker and more efficient in getting event information out to you, by using email, in addition to our bulletin. You can help us:

We're back!!! Get ready for another exciting Congregation Albert Purim Carnival, Queen Esther Rules, on March 12, from 11:30 to 2:00, complete with Purim Shpiel, Costume Parade, Shushan Village, games, raffle drawing, yummy bake sale, and of course, wonderful deli food provided by the Brotherhood. We also have some surprises planned!

Did you know that all Jewish Holidays, except for Yom Kippur and Purim, consist of two parts, one spiritual and the other physical? On Shabbat, for example, we pray at the Synagogue, and have a festive meal and relax at home. Yom Kippur is entirely spiritual: we fast and spend all day at the Synagogue. Purim, by contrast, is completely physical: we feast, visit friends, dress in costumes, and drink to excess.

We will have plenty of goodies to feast on this year; we will bake 150 dozen hamentashen to make sure we also have enough for our Mishloach Manot!!! This year you can preorder and we will have them ready for you at the Carnival. Just send your order and check for $10.00 a dozen to the Temple, c/o Sisterhood Hamentashen Baking, Rita Duley. Specify the filling(s) you want: poppy seed, cherry, apricot, raspberry, chocolate.

One of the four Purim Mitzvot is the sending of portions, or Mishloach Manot. Our newest Sisterhood fundraiser will help you fulfill this Mitzvah. You have until February 28 to send in your order (click here for the order form). If you have any questions, call Marina Rabinowitz.

And of course, we have already collected some FABULOUS items for the raffle. This year's approach is a smaller number of wonderful items, such as a $500 gift card for American Home Furnishings generously donated by Lee Blaugrund, a family JCC membership valued at $1000, four nights for four at the Grand Pacific Resorts in San Diego valued at $1,200, a Hot Air Balloon Ride, and Skybox seats for four at an Isotopes game generously donated by Larry Schwartz. Tickets go on sale soon, so please plan to purchase yours!

If you have any suggestions or can volunteer in any capacity, please call Kathy Davis. To arrange a merchant booth, please call Rhonda Manthei.

The participation of our congregation and our community is what makes this event so successful!

B'shalom,
Kathy Davis, Sisterhood Purim Committee Chair

Attention all Hamentashen bakers

AND THOSE WHO ALWAYS

WANTED TO DO IT….

We will be baking for the Purim Carnival Bake Sale
Sundays February 26 from 2 to 5 pm
March 5 from 9 to 12:30
in the kitchen @ congregation albert.

Please bring three batches of chilled dough (recipes below) and a rolling pin. Dough may be made a couple of days ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator. Even if you cannot stay, bring dough -- we'll use it all, as Sisterhood will supply the filling!!

If you are not able to help on either day, you may donate home baked Hamentashen or other baked goods, especially sugar free. Please leave them in the Temple freezer labeled "Purim Bake Sale" and the item's description including flavor.

Call Marina Rabinowitz to be part of The Purim Bake Team.

Come! You'll have fun!
