School News - December 2005
From
the Director of Education
I have a crumpled and yellowing scrap of paper which says, "Kol Hatchalot Kashet," or "All new beginnings are difficult." This little piece of wisdom was given to me by a rabbi with whom I worked closely in St. Louis a number of years ago; it has held a place of honor on my bulletin board ever since.New beginnings are difficult, but they are also exciting, challenging, enlightening, and rewarding, as has been my "new beginning" at Congregation Albert. Here are my reflections thus far:
Teachers here are committed to Jewish learning and to Congregation Albert. Parents at this congregation want their children to develop a strong Jewish identity. Kids here are enthusiastic, eager, open, and questioning; moreover, they deserve to be challenged and to have their many questions answered to the best of our ability. The Religious Education Committee is a wonderful combination of people committed to children and learning. So many things are good about our program, and my role this year will be to support and nurture them. My other role is to do what I can to enhance the program; a primary goal is to encourage more parent involvement in the school. We plan to offer one "family workshop" for each grade level; I hope also to create some "drop-in" discussion opportunities for parents, particularly on Wednesday nights. Religious School parents will soon receive information about all of these events.
With Chanukah approaching, I feel I'm definitely past the "beginnings" part of my new job, and I'm anxious and ready to be involved in the next phase!
Best wishes for a holiday filled with light and joy,
