Committee News - December 2005
From the Social Action Committee
"Whoever would change people must change the conditions of their lives." Theodore Herzl
This quote seems a perfect mantra for our social action committee and for all congregants to think about. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of others. Thank you for all your past contributions. You are such generous people that we were able to make large deliveries of clothing, school supplies, and personal care items to those in need.
From October through January we will be collecting items for Cuidando Los Ninos, a day care center for the homeless. They have done a wonderful job helping children and parents climb out of homelessness toward independence and responsible lives.
Suggestions for donations: Children's clothing items: jackets, shoes, shirts, pants, socks, underwear, sizes 2. 3. 4. Strollers; infant and toddler car seats. Women's clothing. Appliances: televisions, radios, toasters, VCRs, blenders, clocks, irons. Household items: pots and pans, dishes, silverware, sheets, pillows, blankets, towels, lamps. Gift Certificates: Walmart, Target, K-Mart, Smith's. Office: writing pads, manila folders, file folders, 81/2 x11 photocopier paper.
If you can contribute in any way, please drop off your contribution at the Temple. Please be sure clothing is clean and in good condition. Thank you, again, for your big hearts and thoughtful ways.
B'shalom,
Toby Friedman and Judy Smith,
Social Action Co-Chairs
Open Mind has Something to Crow About
Looking through the Open Mind archives, we were surprised and pleased to note that Open Mind had its debut in February, 1998. The first program featured Rose Cosden discussing her mystery novel When The Wind Blows. Since that time, we have met monthly and heard presentations by members of our congregational community and the general community on topics ranging from climate change to understanding Islam to coping with life's challenges.
Originally conceived as an activity for seniors wanting a program which would bring them together for lunch, Open Mind has grown into a program for anyone and everyone. Attendance ranges from 12 to 24, a number which lends itself to good conversation and lively discussion. Our topics are current, our speakers informed, and we learn something valuable every time.
We're sure that you will find our programs worthwhile, so we invite you to join us on the fourth Tuesday of the month, except December. Bringing your lunch is optional; but do bring an open mind.
