Rose Garden - November 2005

Michelle Goffe Memorial Rose Garden

Change is a fact of life. The natural wonders of the sunshine, rainfall and healthy soil enable the Michelle Goffe Memorial Rose Garden to flourish. But nature alone does not create this garden's beauty. This evolution is a partnership between God's natural gifts and you.

A routine begun in October 1994, following Michelle's tragic death, now continues. A core of regular volunteers from our congregation, Yad b'Yad members and other long time personal friends, have said "Yes."

Their team spirit, combined with their laughter and warm conversation, reflected a feeling of "community." Six year old Andrew and four year old Travis Johns picked up rose clippings as Doug Johns weeded and Marti Johns methodically pruned unhealthy rose branches. Jana Druxman cut out overgrown roses, while Michael Druxman tackled the removal of unhealthy shrubs. Melinda Potcher cleaned and deadheaded. Toby Friedman did whatever task was needed. Toni Pakinkis, our dear custodian, climbed on the ladder to reach and weave long rose stems obstructing the entry path. On a second day, Rita Duley along with Yad b'Yad members and family friend Carol Ward moved bark, fertilized and watered.

Thanks to your financial contributions, drip irrigation, xeric plants, and native grasses now border the north end of the garden.

There have been many changes since the garden's beginning. Jerry, Rachel and I are grateful for your continued volunteer and financial support nurturing the garden's growth for today and providing for future changes.

Sylvia Goffe
