Meet the Caring Committee: Soup and Challah Program
The Caring Committee's primary objective is to reach out to congregants who are ill, bereaved, homebound, or undergoing other difficult life transitions. One important aspect of the Committee's outreach is the delivery of soup and challah. How does this program work? We're glad you asked!
The Committee communicates regularly with the clergy to get the names of congregants who are ill. Once we ascertain that the congregant would appreciate a visit, our Soup and Challah "mitzvah maker" Henri Courtnage then calls upon her list of volunteers to make deliveries on Fridays before Shabbat. The homemade soup and challah from our own Temple challah bakers are delivered in bags decorated by our pre-schoolers and volunteers. Many congregants donate challot to our committee when they order for themselves. We also deliver soup and challah to homebound and bereaved congregants. Last year, we made over 150 deliveries to members of our Temple family!
Many people have reported on how touched they were when, during difficult times, a Caring Committee volunteer from Congregation Albert reached out to them personally, and brought delicious soup and challah, and wishes for a Shabbat Shalom and a speedy recovery.
