Congregation Albert Sisterhood - October 2005
Sisterhood News
Don't forget Tuesday, October 18 for our paid membership Fashion Show! If you have not paid your annual membership, now is the time! Our appreciation goes to Marcia Rosenstein, Arlene O'Callaghan and Trudi Handelman for sending the New Year's greeting cards, and to our congregants who chose this means to wish L'shana tovah to our congregation.
"Rosh Hashanah is unique because it is both serious and festive, "says Amy Kramer. It is a time of spiritual renewal through prayer and deep personal reflection. It is also a time for families and friends to get together, make amends, ask forgiveness and strive to make the next year better. Most important, it recognizes God as sovereign and judge over all living things. Our behavior is weighed, judged and ultimately sealed at the close of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Fortunately, through an intense regimen of Teshuvah (repentance), Tefilah (prayer), and Tzedakah (charity), we can end up on the "right side of the tracks."
The sisterhood of all Jewish communities becomes apparent when we realize that Rosh Hashanah emphasizes the universal. In the southern hemisphere it occurs at the beginning of spring; in Sephardic communities the foods are different. Regardless of variations in climate, taste and environment, we celebrate at this time the creation of the first man and woman and their actions symbolizing mankind's role in God's world. Globalization touched us long before any political economist raised the issue.
