The Mitzvah of Sponsoring an Oneg Shabbat

Sponsoring an Oneg serves many purposes. It helps in our desire to socialize with one another following an evening of spiritual renewal. Jews are known for noshing and talking, usually at the same time! It's an opportunity to share the joy of a special mitzvah … a birthday, an anniversary, a bar or bat mitzvah, a graduation, a confirmation, recovery from illness, a …you get the point. Sponsoring an Oneg is something each family can and should do from time to time. We all have events in our lives worth sharing with one another.

What's involved? Nothing more than providing a selection of cakes, cookies, and/or fruit, including a few sugarless items, on your chosen Friday. The office can assist in letting you know how many people to plan for.

Won't you share your next celebration with your Congregation Albert family? What special event is on your calendar? Plan ahead. Call the office to pick a date and sponsor an Oneg Shabbat today.

Entertainment Books
a great bargain, still only $35

Congregation Albert is now selling the Entertainment Book for only $35. It contains coupons for reduced rates at restaurants of all categories, hotels, attractions, and retail businesses, both local and national. We offer the Entertainment Book as a synagogue fund raiser and it's a great deal for even greater deals. This is an easy way to cost-effectively explore your hometown with the wonderful specials featured in "the Book."

Books are here, and many coupons can be used immediately; the books are valid until November 1, 2006. Come to the office to purchase yours. Although many fund-raising organizations now sell them, you can probably sell several by letting friends, co-workers and neighbors know now that you have them. They also make excellent gifts.

TIP: Keep your book in the glove compartment, where it is always handy to use, and where you easily can check out what is available, wherever you are in the car. You will be surprised at how often you will use it.

Meditation and Kabbalah

We begin our seventh year of Jewish Meditation at Congregation Albert, on the second and fourth Saturdays each month from 9:30 - 10:15, except as noted below. We will also offer Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur morning meditations before services, and an early afternoon Yom Kippur healing service.

In the past, we occasionally included Kabbalistic meditations from our deep and wonderful Jewish mystical tradition. This year, we plan to have a Kabbalah meditation as part of every session, reflecting the increased interest in this area. Facilitators Eileen Yager and Paula Schwartz have over 30 years of meditation experience each. They have studied Jewish meditation with several rabbis in different cities and have a wide repertoire of practices to share. We welcome everyone from beginners to advanced practitioners of any tradition.
