Committee News - October 2005

From the Social Action Committee

"Whoever would change people must change the conditions of their lives." (Theodore Herzl)

In our small way, this is what we try to do through our acts of Tzedakah. Hurricane Katrina has just left a swath of destruction of historic proportions, with unbelievable devastation and tragedy. This reinforces our sense of gratitude and desire to reach out to our fellow man, at least locally. Through the work of our Social Action Committee we offer you the chance to join us.

We rotate the agencies to which we contribute. Through October, we will continue our collection of school supplies for the children of Dolores Gonzales Elementary School, a very needy population in southwest Albuquerque. The principal and teachers are generous, skilled, and caring. If you can contribute any of the supplies on this list, please deliver them to Congregation Albert soon, and we will deliver them to the school, where they will be so gratefully received.

Uniforms: Polo style shirts, red, white, blue, black, sizes 6-16. Khaki style pants and skirts, navy or black, sizes 6-16. Supplies: Spiral notebooks. Erasers. Loose leaf paper. Glue. Pocket folders. Rulers. Post-its. Pencil sharpeners. Tissues. Crayons. Backpacks. Markers. Colored pencils.

Thank you in advance for your generosity,
Toby Friedman and Judy Smith, Social Action Co-Chairs

Meet the Caring Committee

In the spirit of Tikkun Olam, the mission of the Congregation Albert Caring Committee is to provide assistance to members of our community who are in need of support as a result of life changes, loss, or illness.

In a series of articles, we will describe how volunteer "mitzvah makers" reach out to members with both practical and emotional support. This article features "A Time to Talk." Subsequent articles will highlight other aspects of the committee including making soup, delivering soup and challah to ill and bereaved congregants, visiting homebound congregants, and providing rides to Temple functions when possible. To become a mitzvah maker, contact Linda Hayon or Ruth Mondlick.

"A Time to Talk" is facilitated by Pearl Gross and is designed for the bereaved members of our Congregation Albert community. The death of a loved one is an ending like no other, and the grieving process is one of the most painful and difficult tasks we face. No one should have to face this experience alone.

Pearl Gross is available on Fridays or on an as-needed basis to meet with you in a group or individually. It is a time to talk about your loved ones, to remember them and to share those remembrances in a safe, confidential setting. For more information and to schedule a time, call Pearl.

Topic: The US Healthcare System: Meeting The Demands, but is it Meeting the Needs?

The U.S. spends an ever increasing percentage of the GDP on healthcare, nearly twice the expenditure of our economic competitors in Europe and Japan. Is there evidence that these dollars are being well spent? Will further expenditures make outcomes better in the U.S.? Over 30 years of research says "no." This talk will present alternatives.

Please note that Shemini Atzeret falls on Tuesday, so we are meeting on Monday this month. We will return to our NEW fourth Tuesday schedule in November.

For information, please call Janice Goodman or Pearl Gross.
