Kabbalah: Magic, Mysticism and Madonna
Kabbalah, the practice of finding hidden religious meaning in ancient Judaic texts, has recently experienced a surge in popularity after being embraced by celebrities from the world of entertainment and music. The ever-growing list of stars parading through so-called Kabbalah centers includes Madonna, Rosanne Barr, Britney Spears, David and Victoria Beckham, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. They have popularized red string bracelets to ward off envy and ill will; "empowerment stones," etched with the 72 names of God; disease-curing Kabbalah water, "infused with the energy of positive prayer;" and caffeine-based Kabbalah Energy Drink.
What explains this recent interest in Kabbalah? Is it relevant to life or just a passing fad? Congregation Albert's Rabbi Black will address these questions and more at the October 16 brunch, sponsored by the Brotherhood.
Brunch begins at 10:00 am in the Social Hall. The cost is $7 for Brotherhood and Sisterhood members and $9 for others. Reservations should be made no later than October 13 by calling the CAB Response Line at 883-1818, ext. 3203, with your name, phone number, and the number of people. Reservations can also be made when the CAB Calling Committee contacts those people on the phone lists.
We look forward to seeing you there.
