From the Rabbi - August 2005

Dear Friends,

Life is a journey. While this metaphor has become cliché, at times it is still appropriate. During our life's journey, we are often given the supreme pleasure of encountering remarkable individuals who become fellow travelers, who ease our burdens with their partnership, support, friendship and love.

I write this as I think about Leah and John Schaer leaving Albuquerque. During her journey at Congregation Albert, Leah taught our children, supported our teachers, and created wonderful educational programs for all ages. She provided a compassionate presence for young and old, opening her doors (and sharing her never-ending supply of M&M's) to all who needed an attentive ear, a sensitive countenance, or the sound of her laughter, which emanates from her deep reservoir of joy and love of humankind.

Leah is a true team player. She always has gone above and beyond to ensure that any program, event or policy at Congregation Albert is carried out with the utmost sense of professionalism, and to its completion. She has been committed to our community's mission of creating meaningful Jewish experiences and life-long learning.  Hers was not an easy job. Frequently, she became a lightning-rod for a variety of issues. Through it all, she never compromised her absolute integrity.

For me, Leah is more than a colleague; she and John have become dear friends and partners on life's journey. When she shared with me that John had been offered this new professional opportunity, I must confess that my first response was less than altruistic. How could she do this to us? To me! I had come to rely on Leah's counsel and partnership on a daily basis. I even appreciated her goofy sense of humor and practical jokes. But now that I have had some time to allow the reality of her leaving to "sink in," I can share in their joy.

Leah will be a hard act to follow.

I hope that you will all join me in saying farewell to Leah, John, Adam and Josh at Shabbat services on September 9 at 8:00 pm. May this next stage of their life's journey bring them fulfillment and happiness.

B'shalom,
Rabbi Joseph R. Black
