School News - June/July 2005
From the Director of Education
I look forward to seeing you on Saturday morning, June 4 at 10 am, when 19 exceptional students from our tenth grade will be confirmed. Attending Confirmation is a wonderful way to support our students who have successfully completed their formal Jewish education at Congregation Albert. Please join me in honoring our students and their families by celebrating this simcha with them at this very special service.
Please join us as we celebrate our third annual Tikkun Leyl Shavuot, on Sunday, June 12. Congregations Albert and B'nai Israel will come together for dinner and a special evening filled with activities for families with young children, adult and teen study sessions, and the building of community. Please refer to the enclosed flyer and register today.
Summer camp is just around the corner! Camp Oranim, under the leadership of our new camp director Ken Schipper, will be in session for one week, July 31 - August 7. A Jewish camping experience has been identified as one of the most important influences a child can have in building Jewish identity and commitment. Camp Oranim emphasizes the values of tzedakah, tikkun olam and the building of community. To register your children, refer to the enclosed brochure for further details, or call the school office for more information.
Here are some items for your summer checklist:
- Please encourage your children to keep reading over the summer! There are some wonderful books for all ages and interests; visit our library for ideas!
- Return 2005 - 2006 registration forms for Religious and Hebrew School.
- If you have a child who will be five years old by September 1, 2005, be sure to register him/her for Sunday kindergarten.
- If your child is entering grade 4 in Religious School, he/she should be enrolled in the mid-week Hebrew classes as well.
Have a wonderful and relaxing summer.
B'shalom,
Leah Schaer
News From the ECC
One of the biggest benefits of our pre-school and kindergarten is the availability of extended care schedules. We are at school from 7:30 in the morning until 6:00 pm each day. We offer great flexibility in scheduling and our full-day students are exposed to a wide range of activities led by Sheryl Faulconer, Barbara Engelhardt and Bonnie Evnetzky. We look forward to a 2005/2006 school year full of warmth and fun. Have a great summer.Bonnie Joy Evnetzky, Early Childhood Supervisor
During our afternoon program, we switch gears and slow down a bit. The children enjoy a leisurely and very social lunch time followed by a quiet time. Since our afternoon class has a wide range of ages, it has a very hamisha (family) type feeling where children learn from and care for each other. The children move from activity to activity, with their teachers available to give one on one time and help solve problems. Just as in our morning programs, activities are play based since we know that children learn most appropriately through play. Looking around the room on a typical day, you will find children role playing in housekeeping, creating masterpieces in the art area, being engineers in the block area and aspiring writers dictating their stories, while musicians serenade all with their instruments.
We have lots of story times where we read many Jewish themed books. Some afternoons we do special art activities or cooking projects. We are always striving for the children to develop solid social and emotional skills as we help them use their language to express their needs and problem solve. All in all, afternoons are full of energy, creativity, and love.
Shalom,
Sheryl Faulconer
