Kalmus Lounge Dedication
Shabbat Service - Friday, April 22, at 8:00p.m.

A special service will be held to commemorate the completion of the Kalmus Lounge. Our new lounge is part of a bequest from our dear friend and leader Geoffrey Kalmus. The Kalmus Lounge has already become an important center of our congregation. Its inviting, open environment is a wonderful legacy. We also enjoy the comfortable furniture, a gift from Lee Blaugrund in memory of Bertha Danoff.

 From the Rose Garden

As I write this article, I am also envisioning the xeriscape vegetation of the two remaining northeast sections of the Michelle Goffe Memorial Rose Garden. Already many volunteer grasses and asters have chosen to settle here. It's almost as if the plants are quietly saying, "Let's collaborate, so that together as plant and man we can create a space of beauty and conservation."

Congregation members and community friends continue to generously volunteer their gardening time and expertise. Andy Mumma, a family friend and owner of Sunrise Landscape, has installed a hose bib and laid the drip irrigation to this area. Long time friend and landscape designer, Michaela Karni is donating her expertise to help design a plan for this xeric area. Melinda Potcher and Kathy Ellis are contributing their time, experience and passion for plants by also suggesting water-wise plants and manicuring this design proposal. Long-time friend and sculptor Shane Shane quietly brings selected boulders and stones, then arranges these as steppingstones and accent rocks.

We are grateful for your continuing financial support or first time contributions. This demonstrates that you too believe in the perpetuation of the Garden, and joyfully enables us to say, "There is enough money in the Michelle Goffe Memorial Garden Foundation to begin this newest garden project."

Yes! This space is truly a living example of the collaboration between God, nature and man.

Sincerely,
Sylvia, Jerry and Rachel

 Challah Baking

Several years ago, Bernice Herman stopped me in the hall, "Say, would you like to bake challah with us on Friday morning?"

That's how it starts. We have a lot of fun beginning at 7:00 a.m. (6:00 a.m. if Norm LaZar and Betsy are baking).

Come and see. We'll show you the routine. We can always use help, if not each week, once or twice a month; if not at 7, then at 8 or 9 a.m.

It's a successful fund raiser for our congregation and a pure sensual delight!

Please call Judith Sussman or Estelle Kramer.

The Mitzvah of Sponsoring an Oneg Shabbat

Sponsoring an Oneg serves many purposes. It helps in our desire to socialize with one another following an evening of spiritual renewal. Jews are known for noshing and talking, usually at the same time! It's an opportunity to share the joy of a special mitzvah … a birthday, an anniversary, a bar or bat mitzvah, a graduation, a confirmation, recovery from illness, a …you get the point. Sponsoring an Oneg is something each family can and should do from time to time. We all have events in our lives worth sharing with one another.

What's involved? Nothing more than providing a selection of cakes, cookies, and/or fruit, including a few sugarless items, on your chosen Friday. The office can assist in letting you know how many people to plan for.

Won't you share your next celebration with your Congregation Albert family? What special event is on your calendar? Plan ahead. Call the office to pick a date and sponsor an Oneg Shabbat today.

 From the Meditation Group

Shabbat morning meditation has periodically included meditations focused on healing. Meditation as part of a healing process is now of increased interest in the secular world. One only needs to look at the recent articles in Time, Newsweek, and National Geographic to see the general interest.

Meditation on healing has long been a recognized part of Jewish spirituality and practice. The earliest reference goes back to Moses' prayer of healing for his sister Miriam, El na refanah la. (God, heal her.) Here at Congregation Albert, we include a prayer of healing in every Shabbat Service, in addition to holding a Healing Service at Yom Kippur.  We recently experimented with adding a section of healing meditation to our regular practice. Our regular meditators responded favorably and requested that we make it a regular part of our practice, and so we shall. Any who are in need of healing of body, mind or spirit are encouraged to join us on the 2nd and 4th Shabbat. Experience in meditation is not necessary, we teach as we go. Questions are encouraged either by calling Eileen Yager or Paula Schwartz before Shabbat, or in meeting after the meditation has concluded.
