Congregation Albert Brotherhood Brunch, April 17
"Prospects for Peace in Israel: A Discussion With Dana Kursh, Vice Consul of Israel to the Southwest"

With the recent death of PLO leader Yassir Arafat, and the election of Mahmoud Abbas as President of the Palestinian Authority, a window of opportunity has opened in the often contentious relationship between the Israeli and the Palestinian leaderships. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has already freed 500 Palestinian prisoners in a gesture of goodwill. He appears to be firm about a pullout from Gaza, revising the route of the West Bank separation barrier, and dismantling a number of Jewish settlements in those areas. Abbas has won the backing of his Fatah movement for a new 24-member Cabinet and appears to be successfully pressuring militant groups to discontinue terrorist attacks against Israel and Israelis.

The question on everyone's mind is, can it last? Will Jerusalem be the capital of a newly-formed Palestinian state? How will Israel deal with the multitudes of Palestinian refugees who claim a right of return to land in Israel? Will Israel finally be at peace with its Palestinian neighbors, or is this just another lull in the seemingly endless cycle of animosity and tit-for-tat violence?

Dana Kursh, vice consul of Israel to the Southwest, will address these issues and many more during the April 17 brunch program.

The Brotherhood brunch will be held in the social hall of Congregation Albert (3800 Louisiana NE). Please note that the brunch will begin at 9:30 a.m., a half-hour earlier than normal. The cost of the brunch is $6 for Brotherhood members and $8 for all others. The brunch is open to the public and seating is limited. Make reservations no later than April 14 by calling the CAB Response Line at 883-1818, ext. 3203, and leaving your name, telephone number, and the number of people for whom reservations are being made.
