Congregation Albert Brotherhood - March 2005

Brotherhood News

The Congregation Albert Brotherhood has created a new Monthly Community Service Award which will be presented at each monthly CAB breakfast. The award will honor a member of the community for his/her efforts in making Albuquerque and the Jewish community a better place to live. The award will honor those who have had a significant impact on Congregation Albert, the Jewish community and the city and state.

The Brotherhood is pleased to announce its first Community Service Award honoree: Dave Cargo

Please join us at the March 20th breakfast to honor Dave Cargo for his long career in public service. Dave has served as Governor of New Mexico, is a long-standing member of the Brotherhood, and has been involved in so many projects and initiatives throughout the state, country and the world.

Check our web site newsletter, CAB Driver for additional news.

Did you know that Sisterhood members can go to Brotherhood events for the "members-only" price (and vice versa)? Try it out for our March 20th breakfast.

Want a good pastrami sandwich? CAB will be running our outstanding Café Albert Deli at this year's Purim Carnival on the 13th. See you there!

Divine Dreams: From Pharaoh to Freud

Dreams occur at the intersection of spiritual, biological, psychological and sociocultural avenues to understanding. From the clear and prophetic dreams of Abraham and Jacob, to the unclear and interpreted dreams when Joseph was in Egypt, we read accounts of dream material in Torah. In Numbers 12:6, Adonai says, "If there shall be prophets among you, in a vision shall I, the Eternal, make Myself known to him; in a dream shall I speak with him." Are there more prophets to be heard? Can dreams bring us closer to God?

The 1900 publication of The Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud introduced a systematic research approach to the study of brain activity during sleep. The link between dream activity and rapid eye movement (REM), discovered in 1953, was the second step on the "royal road" to the neuroscientific study of the dreaming brain. Today, continued advances in the understanding of brain physiology provide new means of revealing what is hidden from view.

Join us on March 20th for an insightful discussion when our speaker will be John R. Graham MD. Dr. Graham is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry of the University of New Mexico. The New Mexico Psychoanalytic Society has designated him a Master Teacher. The program begins with brunch at 10:00 a.m. in the Social Hall of Congregation Albert (3800 Louisiana NE). The cost is $6 for Brotherhood and Sisterhood members and $8 for others. Seating for the brunch, which is open to the public, is limited. Reservations should be made no later than March 17th by calling 883-1818 ext. 3203.
