Committee News - February 2005

From the Social Action Committee
Winter is here and Spring is still months away. For those of us who are more fortunate, winter just means more bundling up and increasing our use of heat. For those who are less fortunate, who have no permanent residence, winter is endless and without comfort. Congregation Albert's Social Action Committee is asking for your help now.

We are collecting the following items for Healthcare for the Homeless from December through February: warm clothing such as gloves, hats, scarves; personal health items, including soaps and shampoo; and blankets, towels and sheets. If you can donate any of these items, please bring them to the Temple, and we will make the appropriate deliveries. Cuidando Los Ninos could use some additional help on Thursdays, from 4-7. They need some extra help distributing dinners to the children while the parents are receiving training in life skills. Perhaps some of our teenagers would like to earn some mitzvah points. Please give one of us a call if you are interested in helping out.

B'shalom,
Toby Friedman and Judith Smith

From The Caring Committee

Todah Rabah

The Caring Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge its wonderful volunteers, who in the spirit of tikun olam, have helped us in our mission to provide assistance to members of our community who are in need of support as a result of life changes, loss, or illness. This past year we have, in one way or another, interacted with almost one-half of the families within our congregation through our soup `n challah, bereavement, homebound and special projects programs. If you would like to know more about the Caring Committee, please contact me. For information regarding the homebound program please contact Ruth Shore Mondlick; deliveries for soup `n challah contact Henri Courtnage; bereavement concerns, contact Pearl Gross; soup chefs and special projects, contact Marina Rabinowitz. If you know of someone who needs the attention of our committee, please talk with Cantor Barbara Finn, our clergy liaison, or Rabbi Joseph Black.

The following people help us to perform our mitzvot, and we are most grateful for their donations of care, time, soup, challah, and financial support. We also would like to acknowledge Allan and Roberta Lipman, who make condolence calls, and Kathy Gross for coordinating rides for the High Holy Days. Our congregational family is strengthened through their commitment to us, and we appreciate each act of chesed (loving kindness) that they do. Thanks also to our clergy for its guidance, the Board of Trustees for its continuing support of our efforts, and to the office staff for its help.

B'shalom,
Shawn Perry-Turner, Caring Committee Chair

Help! Some of our Bulletins Are Missing

The Israel C. Carmel Archive needs your help.

Our committee would like to complete the collection of the congregation's bulletins. We are missing many bulletins from the 1970s and almost everything earlier than that. If you've been holding on to these pieces of our historical record and wondering what to do with them, please donate them to the Archive. You can either leave them in the office or call Judy Weinreb at 344-6080 and we will arrange to pick them up.

We are pleased to announce that the work of recording our records and documents continues. We have approximately 2500 records on a searchable database at this time. We would love to accept your donations of photographs or any documents or records that relate to Congregation Albert and its members.

The Archive is also available for research by appointment.

Topic: Health Care Decision Making

Health care decision making changed dramatically after 1995 legislation and the repeal of the Right to Die Act.

Who besides the patient has the right to give instructions about health care?

What happens to old Right to Die statements?

If families disagree about a patient's care, who gets to decide?

How can you insure that your wishes about health care are honored?

For information, please call Janice Goodman or Pearl Gross.
