"Jews and Humor: Mishna, Midrash and Mishegas"
The anthology of Jewish athletes may not be the thickest book in the library, but no one can ignore the anthology of Jewish humorists and comedians. Humor is an integral part of Jewish history, traditions and lore. What is so humorous about the Bible, biblical commentaries and Jewish law? Why are Yiddish curses so devastatingly funny? What the heck is so jocular about thousands of years of poverty, displacement and persecution?
The Jan. 23 brunch, sponsored by the Congregation Albert Brotherhood, will feature author, former National Book Awards judge, and congregation member Lois Ruby, who will talk about the esteemed place of humor in the lives of the Jewish people.
The brunch, which is open to the public, will begin at 10 a.m. in the Social Hall of Congregation Albert (3800 Louisiana NE). The cost is $6 for Brotherhood members and spouses and $8 for all others. Reservations should be made no later than Jan. 20 by calling the CAB Response Line at 883-1818 ext. 3203 and leaving your name, phone number and the number of people for whom reservations are being made. Reservations can also be made with members of the CAB Calling Committee, who will contact you. We look forward to seeing you there.
"Check our web site newsletter, CAB Driver for additional news and bit of irreverence. Any CABers interested in a bowling league? Contact Tom Ruby."
