School News - November 2004
From the Director of Education
The Religious School curriculum has focal areas that are woven throughout each grade level. They are: Jewish Customs and Practices, Holidays, Prayer, God and Ritual, Hebrew, Torah, Jewish History, Israel, Values and Ethics, and Jewish Identity. Each of these areas is infused in an age appropriate manner. It's our goal to create a connection between school and home, learning and life. Below is a brief synopsis as the school year begins.Kindergarten: The theme for the year is Bereshit as this is the first year of formal Jewish education. Beginning with Consecration the students have been immersed in learning about the Shema, the Torah, and are being introduced to the parasha of the week and basic Hebrew terminology.
1st Grade: Learning about the synagogue is the theme of the year. Students are learning about ritual objects found in the sanctuary, the roles of the rabbi and the cantor and the meanings of tzedakah and mitzvot. Throughout this semester, students are learning the blessings for Shabbat and beginning to study stories about people in the Torah.
2nd Grade: The Jewish year is the theme this grade. Students are studying the Jewish calendar, discussing the connections with Jewish traditions, Torah, God and the Jewish people. The class will continue to build their Hebrew vocabulary.
3rd: During third grade, a more in-depth study takes place focusing on the TaNaKh. Students learn about Torah, N'vieem & Ketuvim. We also spend time building the students' knowledge and understanding of Bible stories within our history utilizing the textbook A Child's Bible: Lessons from the Prophet and Their Writings.
The staff and I look forward to continuing to build the partnership between the synagogue, school and home.
B'shalom,

Have Your Heard About Our Madrikhim Program?
We currently have a special group of 17 students who are in junior high, high school and college who volunteer within our religious school program.
The Madrikhim (teen assistants program) enriches the scope of Jewish education within our school. These teen assistants serve as role models for our students. They can see the learning process from all perspectives and develop into future teachers and leaders in the Jewish community. Our Madrikhim serve in a support role within the classrooms, assisting the teachers in the learning process.
