The Mitzvah of Sponsoring
an Oneg Shabbat
Sponsoring an Oneg serves many purposes. It helps in our desire to socialize with one another following an evening of spiritual renewal. Jews are known for noshing and talking, usually at the same time! It's an opportunity to share the joy of a special mitzvah a birthday, an anniversary, a bar or bat mitzvah, a graduation, a confirmation, recovery from illness, a you get the point. Sponsoring an Oneg is something each family can and should do from time to time. We all have events in our lives worth sharing with one another. What's involved? Nothing more than providing a selection of cakes, cookies, and/or fruit, including a few sugarless items, on your chosen Friday. The office can assist in letting you know how many people to plan for.
Won't you share your next celebration with your Congregation Albert family? What special event is on your calendar? Plan ahead. Call the office to pick a date and sponsor an Oneg Shabbat today.
Shalom to my new congregational family.
My name is Cantor Barbara R. Finn and I come to "The Land of Enchantment" from "The Land of Oz." I have lived in the Kansas City area most of my life but I truly look forward to living where the terrain is a little more varied and the seasons are a little less extreme.
My husband David and I have been married twenty-six years and we have two wonderful children. Elizabeth is twenty-two and just received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Jewish Studies from the University of Indiana. Our son, Daniel, is eighteen and will be a freshman at the University of Kansas in the fall. David has a Bachelor of Arts in English from California State University, Northridge and a Masters in Secondary Education from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and has been teaching for over thirty years. My degrees include a Bachelor of Music from the University of Texas at Austin in Music Education and Voice with Minors in History, Yiddish Language and Literature, a Masters Degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City in Educational Administration and my Cantorial Certification and Investiture came from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion School of Sacred Music.
Although this is just an "introduction" I hope this will be the first of many "conversations" I will have with you via the newsletter. I would like to close with a brief excerpt from my resume:
My goal is to serve Congregation Albert as cantor and to use my spiritual, musical and educational leadership skills and my love of Judaism, and Jewish music to enrich all aspects of congregational life.
I look forward to meeting you all very soon.
