School News - June/July 2004
From the Director of Education
At Congregation Albert, we are strong advocates of the Jewish summer camp experience. As educators and parents, we understand that attending Jewish summer camp affords children a unique opportunity to develop their own sense of Jewish self and an appreciation for Judaism. In lieu of my monthly column, I want to share an extraordinary letter written by one of our students. I hope that you, too, will be inspired by Annie's experience.
Shalom,
Leah SchaerMy name is Annie. After encouragement from Rabbi Black, I signed up to attend Camp Newman. This summer will be my 4th year. Camp has made such an impact on me! I even wrote a paper for school about how I want to encourage others to experience the joy of Jewish camping. I want you and all of your staff to know how much camp has impacted my life. I plan to come back as a CIT and Counselor and eventually a Song Leader.
When my parents make donations to the temple, I ask them to donate to the camp scholarship fund. I've benefited from camp scholarships in the past, and know how important they are to families. Camp is an incredible adventure that everyone should be able to experience. As soon as I can, I plan on making that goal come true.
I'm only fourteen and realize what I can do now is limited, but I think children would be inspired to attend camp after hearing from a friend. I would be very happy to help in any way with prospective campers.
Lastly, I want you to know how much camp means to me. Camp has given me so much. I've made amazing lifelong friends, we still keep in touch. It has strengthened my Jewish identity, involvement in my synagogue (I aid on Sunday mornings) and within the Jewish community.
Camp gave me the courage and love of Judaism that I need to do all of these things.
Sincerely,
Annie Kaufman
