From the Cantor - June/July 2004

"There let the pealing organ blow,
To the full-voiced choir below,
In service high, and anthems clear,
As may with sweetness, through mine ear,
Dissolve me into ecstasies,
And bring all Heav'n before mine eyes".

John Milton - Il Penseroso (1632)

Shalom, Chaveirim - life is full of holy moments, and few bring such joy as when two people declare a lifetime commitment to each other before God, friends and family. Most wedding liturgy comes from the Song of Songs - the most romantic, sensual book in the Tanach. When you scurry to your personal libraries to scour your English Bibles in search of this fine read, you will discover chapters upon chapters of the finest odes ever to depict love between two parties.  These verses may certainly be taken at face value. Our rabbis teach us that Song of Songs parallels the love and commitment between God and Israel. Appropriately, Song of Songs is also read or chanted on Pesach and, in some communities, every Shabbat. Read it with someone you love today.

Happy marriages are good metaphors for all commitments requiring love, learning, spirituality, patience, growth and nourishment. So it is with synagogues. Congregation Albert has been my family's spiritual home for the past seven years and it is now time to say L'hitra'ot. As you welcome my good friend Cantor Barbara R. Finn to our family, I wish you the following:

Mark, Harry and I will always be FOA - Friends of Albert. Where else could we find green chile matza balls, Stetsons as kippot, and bolo ties on Rosh Hashanah? We love you. We'll miss you. We'll be back to visit as friends.

B'Shalom u-v'shir,
Cantor Jacqueline L. Shuchat-Marx
