The Mitzvah of Sponsoring an Oneg Shabbat

Sponsoring an Oneg serves many purposes. It helps in our desire to socialize with one another following an evening of spiritual renewal. Jews are known for noshing and talking, usually at the same time! It's an opportunity to share the joy of a special mitzvah … a birthday, an anniversary, a bar or bat mitzvah, a graduation, a confirmation, recovery from illness, a …you get the point. Sponsoring an Oneg is something each family can and should do from time to time. We all have events in our lives worth sharing with one another.

What's involved? Nothing more than providing a selection of cakes, cookies, and/or fruit, including a few sugarless items, on your chosen Friday. The office can assist in letting you know how many people to plan for.

Won't you share your next celebration with your Congregation Albert family? What special event is on your calendar? Plan ahead. Call the office to pick a date and sponsor an Oneg Shabbat today.

A Thank You to
Cantor Jacqueline Shuchat-Marx

As we welcome back our beloved Rabbi Black from his sabbatical, it's important that we acknowledge the superb effort put forth by Cantor Jacquie during our Rabbi's absence. In conjunction with Rabbi Maslin, Cantor Jacquie covered the many life cycle events that occurred, helped to organize Shabbat services for three months, and was the heart and soul of our congregation.

As Cantor Jacquie recuperates from her recent surgery, and you think about monthly contributions to honor or memorialize a friend or loved one, please give some thought to directing a portion of your donated dollars to the Cantor's Discretionary Fund.

Gary Singer, President

Have You Heard This One?

"Would you like dinner?" the EL AL flight attendant asked Moshe, seated in front. "What are my choices?" Moshe asked. "Yes or no," she replied.

Three Jewish women get together for lunch. As they are being seated in the restaurant, one takes a deep breath and gives a long, slow "oy." The second takes a deep breath as well and lets out a long, slow "oy." The third takes a deep breath and says impatiently, "Girls, I thought we agreed that we weren't going to talk about our children."

A woman goes to the post office to buy stamps for her Chanukah cards. She says to the clerk "May I have 50 Chanukah stamps please." "What denomination?" says the clerk. The woman says "Oy vay, my goodness, has it come to this? Okay, give me 6 orthodox, 12 conservative and 32 reform!"

Everybody's Business

Mazel tov to Congregation Albert member Gail Rubin, the proud author of her first nonfiction book, A Girl's Pocket Guide to Trouser Trout. If men were fish and women the anglers, this is your how-to guide for landing a good catch. This hilarious book illuminates the murky waters of the dating pool with insights inspired by fly-fishing techniques and advice.

Fellow congregant Rick Eisler was the model for the book's cover art. The book is available online through 1stBook Publishers, website: www.1stBooks.com, as well as on Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and directly from the author.
