Congregation Albert Sisterhood - January 2004
Sisterhood News
As we throw out the old 2003 calendars, we look forward to an exciting new year of programming and activities in our Sisterhood. On Sunday, January 11, we invite you to join Sisterhood, Brotherhood, and the Adult Education Committee at 10 a.m. for brunch and a discussion, "Modern Plagues." This promises to be an insightful look at the medical dilemmas facing us and the options that exist to combat these problems. On Thursday, January 22, Ron Wallace of the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities will present an evening program on "Surviving the Unexpected -Youth and Gangs in New Mexico." Don't miss this compelling discussion. There is no admission charge for students. If you are not a Sisterhood member, and you have made a resolution to become more involved in 2004, consider the following:
Please join us and become a part of this energizing force!
Stay healthy and warm, and may 2004 be a year of Shalom for all of us,

We are announcing our 5764 Purim Carnival, "Mordechai's Madness," which will take place on March 7. Celebrated on the 14th of Adar with the reading of the megillah, Purim commemorates Esther's rescue of the Jewish people. Esther, the cousin of Mordechai, became the second wife of Ahasuerus, the King of Persia. Mordechai, as advisor to the king, refused to bow down to Haman, another advisor. Haman hatched a plot to have Mordechai and the Jews of Shushan killed. Haman drew numbers (lots) to determine the day on which the Shushan Jews would die. Purim means "lots" - hence the holiday's name. Mordechai discovered the plot and enlisted the help of Esther. Haman was hanged, and Mordechai and the Jews of Shushan were saved.
Mark your calendars: On Saturday, March 6, during services, we will read the megillah, one of the five scrolls of the Bible (Ruth, Song of Solomon, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes and Esther). However, most often the term "megillah" refers to the scroll of Esther, which is read in its entirety at Purim. Because the scroll of Esther is 10 chapters long, the phrase "whole megillah" has come to mean the entirety or total amount of something. We'll share more about the megillah next month.
We need many volunteers to make this carnival as great as the last one. We are looking for raffle prize donations (last year we had over 50 prizes), as well as upscale items for the Royal Sale, and vendors for the Unwalled Village (call Toby Fedoravicius or Arlene Paglia).
If you are interested in becoming involved with planning the carnival please contact Marina Rabinowitz, Marina Brown, or Kathy Davis. Bring a friend to make it more fun.
We are already taking names for volunteers. The participation of our congregation and our community is what makes this event so successful!
