Israeli Rabbi Levi Weiman-Kelman
Will Speak About Peace Prospects In the Middle East
and The Growing Reform Movement In Israel

Israel today struggles to find a way to live in peace with its Palestinian and Arab neighbors; at the same time, Jews within Israel are struggling to find a voice that represents their religiously pluralistic views. For years, the ultra orthodox Jews in Israel have regarded themselves as the keepers of the true Jewish faith and have exercised political influence well beyond what their actual numbers ought to dictate. This has polarized Israeli society and affected not only religious affiliation within the country, but also Israel's relationship with Jews in the Diaspora - particularly in the United States. In addition, right wing religious politics has exacerbated the tension between Israel and its neighbors.

Things, however, are changing in Israel as the Reform movement grows, giving increasing numbers of people the opportunity to express more moderate views and alternatives toward achieving peace with Israel's neighbors and lessening of the divisive internal discord.

Rabbi Levi Weiman-Kelman will address these issues and more at the February brunch sponsored by the Congregation Albert Brotherhood. Rabbi Levi Weiman-Kelman is senior rabbi of Kehilat Kol Haneshama, the fastest growing Reform congregation in Jerusalem and one of the most dynamic congregations in Israel. The congregation has served as a model for inter-religious understanding, dialog and healing in Jerusalem. Rabbi Weiman-Kelman is also a leader of the Israeli Movement for Progressive Judaism, and of Rabbis for Peace. He has chaired the Council of Progressive Rabbis, and Rabbis For Human Rights.

The brunch will be held February 9 starting at 10 am in the Congregation Albert Social Hall. The cost is $6 for CAB members and $8 for all others. Reservations need to be made no later than Feb. 6 by calling the CAB Response Line at 883-1818, ext. 3203, and leaving your name and the number of people who will be attending. Reservations can also be made with members of the CAB Calling Committee, who will contact those people on the call lists during the week prior to the brunch. Finally, reservations can be made by sending an e-mail message to Brotherhood_at_ca

We look forward to seeing you all there!
