From the Cantor - November 2002
Shalom, Chaveirim:
Books, food and music: what could be a better tonic at this time of year? The following events speak for themselves:
Sunday, November 3: Our annual Book Fair! One of my favorite Edward Gorey sayings is, "Books...cats...life is good!" Truer words were never spoken. (Cats not included in book fair). My special recommendation for this month is Rabbis, The Many Faces of Judaism, George Kalinsky's beautiful photographic collection of 100 rabbis from around the world in all sizes, shapes, denominations and nationalities. Featured especially is our own Rabbi Black - kol ha- kavod! See more in this bulletin about Rabbis, The Many Faces of Judaism and its availability.
Friday, November 15, 6 pm: Family Service with HaShirah Junior Choir.
Wednesday, November 27, 7 pm: As always, our congregation participates in the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service which will be hosted this year by our friends at First Congregational United Church of Christ, located at Lomas and Girard. Zamir and HaShirah choirs will participate in some gorgeous music. Please come to sing and say Thank You, and please bring a non-perishable food item (no glass jars, please) to donate to The Storehouse.
Friday, November 29, 8 pm: First night of Chanukah, and the first of two Shabbatot in Chanukah. This doesn't happen every year, you know. On the 29th, Zamir will grace our services. The following Friday, December 6, will kick off the 2nd Shabbat in Chanukah - Family Shabbat with HaShirah followed by Brotherhood's Annual Latke Dinner.
Saturday, November 30: Mark and I invite you to Shabbat morning services where we will welcome our son into the Jewish community and formally announce his given name and his Hebrew name. We hope you will join us to share in our joy.
Chag Yom Hodu Sameach (Happy Thanksgiving) and Chag Chanukah Sameach!
B'Shalom u-v'shir,
Cantor Jacqueline L. Shuchat-Marx
