The Four Weeks of Elul 5763 - Week Four

Week Four: Physical Selves

The torah portion for the Shabbat prior to Rosh Ha Shanah is Nitzavim.  In it we read:  Atem nitzavim - Kulchem - "You are all standing before God."

Truly this is a time when we are preparing ourselves for the holy task of standing in God's presence  -- as individuals and as a community.  The Rabbis take great pains to point out that the word, Nitavim, means standing "at attention."  We are focused, ready to listen, respond and react to God's voice.

This is the last week of Elul.  During the past month we have striven to open our minds, our hearts, our relationships with one another to prepare us for the Yamim Noraim.  This week, I want you to focus on the bodies that God has given us.

If we do not take care of our bodies, then we cannot perform Tikkun Olam - the repairing of our world. Our bodies are holy - they are the image of God. These questions examine habits and attitudes about our physical selves that impact on our lives in a direct manner.

  1. Have I taken care of my body through diet and exercise?
  2. Am I getting enough sleep?
  3. Am I taking time to relax, to enjoy life?
  4. Have I truly appreciated the beauty of the mountains that surround me?
  5. How much stress is in my life?
  6. What bad habits have I cultivated that I want to change?
  7. What positive habits should I working to incorporate into my daily routine?

I want to wish you all a Shanah Tovah U'metukah - a good and sweet New Year.  I look forward to greeting you during the Holy Days.

B'Shalom,
