From the President - May 2002

Dear Congregants,

Many of you are aware that the Executive Committee of Congregation Albert has granted Rabbi Black a six-month sabbatical leave. This Sabbatical is a central aspect of our 5 year contract with Rabbi Black

In order to ensure that our congregational life continues in as normal a fashion as possible during Rabbi Black's absence, we made the award contingent upon the following two provisions: (1) The Rabbi will take his sabbatical leave in two installments - three months at the beginning of 2003 and three months at the beginning of 2004. (2) The Rabbi will develop alternative ways to carry out most, if not all, of his regular duties during his absence. Rabbi Black accepted both of these provisions.

I am not sure how many of you realize how demanding, stressful, and time-consuming a rabbi's job is, but I am sure that all of you know how pleased we are with Rabbi Black.

We award Rabbi Black a sabbatical leave not only to show him our appreciation; we do so for a selfish reason as well. A sabbatical leave will give our beloved Rabbi a chance to relax, reflect, study, and "recharge his batteries." In other words, I see the granting of this leave not only as a reward for outstanding performance but also as a wise long-term investment.

In the near future Rabbi Black will communicate with you directly and describe to you in detail the arrangements that will be in place during his absence.

I hope you will join me in thanking Rabbi Black for a job well done and in praying that his sabbatical leave will be both productive and invigorating.

Michael Gross,
President
