Islam: Faith, People and History
Dr. Sami Shakir, a devout Muslim and Muslim preacher at the Islamic Center of New Mexico, will be the featured speaker for the November 18 Brotherhood brunch program. Dr. Shakir is a past president and current treasurer of the Islamic Center. A physicist by training, Dr. Shakir works at Northrup Grumman, where he does research on high-energy laser projects related to defense.
Dr. Shakir is a Sunni Muslim of Kurdish ethnic background from Iraq. He will speak about the origins and evolution of Islam, the roots of terrorism as it pertains to the tragic events of September 11, and Islamic law as derived from the Quran. He will also entertain questions from the audience at the conclusion of his presentation.
The Brotherhood brunch is open to the public. The cost is $6 for Brotherhood members and their guests, and $8 for all others. If you have not received a phone call or E-mail by Wednesday, November 14 to take a reservation for the brunch, please call Brotherhood President Shelly Liebman at 332-1281.
