From the President - January 2001
Dear Friends,
I am pleased to report that the Long Range Planning Committee
has submitted an excellent report to the Board. We are working at
implementing the report. At this time, we have already
accomplished many of the recommendations from Long Range Planning
by:
- Hiring a full-time educator whose duties include
education from cradle to grave.
- Initiating a Havurah program in which 130 members formed
new Havurah groups. We now have 13 Havurot.
- Advancing new cooperative relationships among the various
Jewish organizations in Albuquerque and strengthening
existing ones. We are currently in the process of working
jointly with the JCC on our 2001 Golf Tournament (our top
fundraising activity for the Temple).
- Improving communication by placing nearly one-half of our
households on our email list and providing weekly notices
of events via email as well as emergency or special
notification by email.
- Repaying the largest part of the monies borrowed from our
restricted funds. In a process that is continuing, we are
especially pleased to have completely repaid our Cemetery
Fund. In addition, we have amended our Constitution to
ensure that such borrowing cannot occur in the future.
- Documenting, through the work of our Membership
Committee, the reasons members leave, and, where
appropriate, addressing problem areas.
- Reinstating our kindergarten program.
- Developing new prayer books with transliteration and
translation. These new books have enabled many
congregants to pray with the Congregation without having
to know how to read Hebrew.
- Expanding our adult education offerings.
- Providing to the Social Action Committee a bulletin board
in the front lobby to inform congregants of social action
activities.
- Adding greeters and ushers at most services.
- Offering "Teaching Services".
- Initiating opportunities for informal dialog with Clergy
and Lay Leadership.
- Supporting TASTY's food drive for the JFS food bank.
Thank you to Long Range Planning and all the people who
participated. These accomplishments have strengthened our
Congregation.
B'Shalom,
Karen Kahn
