From the Cantor - December 2000

Shalom, Chaverim:

This is the time of year when the days are the shortest and the nights longest. In times of darkness, we need only make our own light to see clearly once more. If you are unable to make your own light, make a light for someone else in the darkness with you. Then your light will double and shine over all. I want to share a Hanukkah folk poem with you; please use it in your own life as you see fit.

Banu choshech l'garesh

B'yadeinu or ve'eish

Kol echad hu or katan

V'chulanu or eitan

Sura choshech ha-la-sh'chor

Sura mip'ney ha-or

Here we come to banish darkness

Light and fire from our hands

Each of us is a little light

And together we are a firm light.

Flee, darkness, into the blackness!

Flee before the light!

For me the third and fourth lines of this song embody the truest meaning of Hanukkah. May you find light this season where you need it most.

Speaking of light, you can already look forward to those faraway summer months by imagining yourself (or your children) at Camp Oranim, Camp Newman or Swig, or on a NFTY Israel trip. Now is the time to make plans for an unforgettable summer for your children. Having myself been a child of the UAHC camps and NFTY in Israel, I guarantee your child will come home a different individual than when he or she embarks. You may not get back a future rabbi or cantor or temple educator, but then again, you might! Applications for attendance and scholarships are being taken as you read this, and time is of the essence. Go for it!

B'Shalom u-v'shir,
Cantor Jacqueline L. Shuchat-Marx
