From the Cantor - October 2000

L'shanah Tovah u-metukah! As you read this column, we celebrate the New Year 5761. Mark joins me in wishing you an especially good year. Last year we wrapped ourselves in your kindness and care during difficult times for our family. Your words, hugs and deeds sustained us during the loss of my father Harry Marx (of blessed memory) and the beginning of the year that follows. You cheered us on as we moved into a home of our own. As your Cantor, I find it much easier to let my hair down during your difficulties than during my own. Thank you for your understanding in all respects. Whether we celebrate together or mourn together, we do so as a family. That is one of the unique treasures of Congregation Albert. May this year be better than the last!

If you read this bulletin and calendar, you will see that your synagogue has something for everyone. If you look even closer at the dates and times of events, you will see that this is even truer. The sun never sets on Adult Education. Enjoy a Shabbat lunch and discussion with visiting scholar Rabbi Uri Regev on the first morning of Sukkot. Wrap up the High Holy Days by dancing on Simchat Torah. By day you can improve your mind at a Brotherhood Breakfast, learn to chant the Scroll of Esther, or participate in a book review. By night you can improve your Hebrew reading skills; study colorful characters in the Bible, watch a fashion show, sing with a terrific choir; help start a junior youth group; or attend a Sisterhood dinner with different courses at different locations. And that's just in October!

While making this year your best, consider how many programs at Congregation Albert can benefit from your skills, your time, your expertise, and your care. We have many departments that are up-and-running; and several that could use a huge kick-start from you. If you see a need to be filled, chances are that you are the key person
who can make it happen.

B'Shalom u-v'shir,
Cantor Jacqueline L. Shuchat-Marx
