Please join us for our first
brunch of the 2000-2001 season as Bernalillo County District
Attorney hopefuls
Kari Brandenburg and L. Skip Vernon
participate in a candidate forum.
Brandenburg, a Democrat, was born and raised in Albuquerque. She graduated from Sandia High School in 1972, received a bachelor's degree from Trinity University in San Antonio in 1976, and then completed her law degree at Southern Methodist University in 1979.
She has had extensive trial experience as an attorney with the New Mexico Public Defenders Office. In 1982, she joined her father, former Bernalillo County District Attorney Jim Brandenburg, in private practice. She now limits her work to criminal law.
Brandenburg is married to attorney Bruce Pasternack. They have four children ages 4-15.
Republican L. Skip Vernon is also a lifelong resident of Albuquerque. He attended Del Norte High School and went on to attend New Mexico State University on athletic scholarship, where he earned varsity letters in football and track, and graduated with honors.
In the years immediately after graduation, Vernon signed contracts to play with the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Colts and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During much of this time, he continued to operate his own painting, wallcovering and coating business.
In 1984, at age 27, Vernon was elected to the State Senate and was the youngest member of that body for the next 10 years. In 1992 he was elected by his fellow Republican senators to the No. 2 leadership position of Whip. That same year, Vernon received his law degree from the University of New Mexico. In 1999 he was elected as the Senate Republican leader.
Vernon is currently an attorney with Keleher & McLeod, and is the owner of Coating & Lining Technologies Inc. He and his wife, Lee Ann, have three children ages 11-15.
