From the Cantor - August 2000

Shalom Chaverim!

Will we ever get accustomed to school starting during summer's loveliest days? We might as well come clean and sing out a resounding "but NOooo!" Now that we've got that out of our systems, B'ruchim Haba'im — Welcome (or welcome back, as it were). Here are some of the anticipated highlights:

We welcome the kindergarten back to our Early Childhood Center! My work thrives on joyful noise, and the sounds that come from the school wing will be ever sweeter with the added voices from the new class. A special welcome to Dale Cooperman, our new kindergarten teacher.

I'm starting a new Anshei Mitzvah class Wednesday evenings beginning in September. Anshei Mitzvah means, "people of the commandment." Please see me if you are comfortable reading prayerbook Hebrew and are interested.

Last year, congregants chanted from the Megillah (Scroll) of Esther at our Purim Service. In September I am offering a course in chanting Esther trop (cantillation) for adults and post-B'nai Mitzvah students who already know how to chant Torah trop.

Please join me in March for Cantor's Brown Bag Book Review, a four-week lunchtime discussion of one or more books by Allegra Goodman.

As always, I look forward to Sunday mornings in Religious School, Wednesday afternoons in Hebrew School, and praying with our fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders in Junior Congregation, which will meet on thirteen Shabbat mornings beginning August 26 at 9:00 AM.

If your child enjoys singing, particularly at Shabbat family services, and attends grades 3 through 6 in our Religious School (or the equivalent at Solomon Schechter Day School), HaShirah, our junior choir, welcomes old and new members. Please contact me as soon as possible; we begin rehearsals on September 10.

I'm thrilled to finally have the opportunity to take Rabbi Black's "Introduction to Judaism" class on Tuesday evenings! See you in class!

B'Shalom u-v'shir,
Cantor Jacqueline L. Shuchat-Marx
