The Jewish Holiday of
Shavuot will begin with a celebration of Tikkun Leyl
Shavuot. On Thursday, June 8, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Rabbi Joseph Black, Cantor Jacqueline Shuchat-Marx, lay and staff members of Congregation Albert will lead the evening program of study and prayer to be followed by refreshments and socializing. This program at Congregation Albert is free and open to the community. Shavuot, originated as an agricultural celebration of the barley harvest. After the destruction of the second Temple, Shavuot took on a greater religious context denoting the day on which, it is said, the people Israel received the Torah at Mt. Sinai. Tradition includes the reading of the Book of Ruth, the story of the Moabite woman who chose to accept the commandments of Torah and who was an ancestor of King David. The importance both of the harvest and of receiving Torah at Mt. Sinai helps explain why Shavuot is included with Sukkot and Pesach as a major pilgrimage festival. Congregation Albert's Tikkun Ley'l Shavuot observance is appropriate for persons 13 and older. Please complete and return the form below to reserve your space. |
