Brotherhood News - May 2000

Brotherhood Breakfast

When: Sunday, May 21, 2000 at 10:00 A.M.
Where: Social Hall – Congregation Albert
Guest Speakers: Two long-time State Legislators,
Senators Cisco McSorley and Bill Davis
Topic: "The Future of Hate Crimes Legislation in New Mexico"

McSorley is a Democrat who has served in the State Legislature since 1984, first in the House and now the Senate. He has consistently, though unsuccessfully, introduced hate crimes legislation. He will talk about why he and fellow Democrats generally support this type of crime-enhancement bill, and what he thinks are the biggest stumbling blocks to getting such a bill passed.

Davis, a Republican, is currently a candidate for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Jeff Bingaman. A member of the State Legislature since 1989, Davis has represented both District 18 and 21. He is a point man for the Johnson administration on the issue of hate crimes legislation and will speak about why he, most fellow Republicans and the governor have opposed such legislation.

Both men are highly articulate and well respected members of the State Legislature.

They have served on numerous legislative committees as well as a host of civic and charitable organizations.

The brunch, which begins at 10 a.m. in the temple social hall, costs $6 for Brotherhood members and their guests, and $8 for all others.

If you have not received a phone call or E-mail by May 17 to take a reservation for the brunch, please call Brotherhood President Shelly Liebman at 332-1281.

You can also reserve space by sending an E-mail message to Brotherhood@CongregationAlbert.org.
