From Pathways To Jewish Life - April 2000
February and March have been active months for participants in the programs of the Pathways (formerly known as Outreach) Committee.
An enthusiastic group of individuals who completed the "Introduction to Judaism" class with Rabbi Black and who are serious candidates for conversion have formed a Conversion support group. Guided by the training I received last summer at the Outreach Fellows Program at Hebrew Union College, in Cincinnati, I have acted as facilitator for the group. We covered a range of topics that was based on the expressed needs and concerns of the members. By creating an intimate and secure environment, we were able to talk about many of the pyscho-social hot spots that potential Jews-By-Choice face. The group has bonded in a special way that has given them the confidence needed to continue on the life-transforming path they have chosen. Future plans for the group include learning basic Hebrew and participation in a Partners-In-Judaism mentoring program that Rabbi Black and I are developing.
A program for all congregation members as well as those considering conversion to Judaism took place recently. "You, Too, Can Lead A Seder" offered participants an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming Passover holiday. On April 11th at 7:00 P.M., the annual Outreach Seder will take place. Everyone is welcome. The cost is $6.00. Reservations must be made by April 7th by calling 883-1818 ext. 3016. Babysitting is available upon request to the same extension. This is a great way to have a hands-on Seder experience while enjoying good food and fellowship.
In May, a Shabbat and Havdalah workshop will take place. It will be followed by a Shabbat Dinner for all participants. July 9,16, and 26th, we will be offering a UAHC program entitled, "A Taste of Judaism". Watch your Bulletin for more details about these and other exciting future events. Call me, Glenda Orchant, at the temple to join the committee, to register for any of the programs mentioned, or to suggest names of those you feel might benefit from them.
B'Shalom,
Glenda
