FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sonia Weitz to speak at Congregation Albert March 27, 2000.
Holocaust Survivor and internationally recognized poet will address the universal questions of obedience, racism, responsibility and justice.

(ALBUQUERQUE, NM ) Sonia Weitz, a Holocaust educator and survivor of five Nazi concentration camps will speak at Congregation Albert on March 27, 2000 at 7:00 p.m. Weitz, who has been called "a survivor with a poet's eye," will share her experiences during World War II in a lecture. Weitz, a contemporary of Anne Frank, is the author of "I promised I Would Tell," copies of which will be available at the lecture. A dessert reception and book signing will be held after the event.

While in Albuquerque, Weitz will also address the student body at the Albuquerque Academy.

Weitz was 11 years old when her family and other Polish Jews were herded into ghettos and forced to live in treacherous conditions that often led to death. Of the 84 members of her family, Weitz and her sister Blanca were the sole survivors. To help cope with her emotions, Weitz turned to writing poetry at an early age. Today, she teaches and lectures to adults and children about the Holocaust.

In recent years, Weitz has been active in Holocaust education and Jewish-Christian relations. A highly motivated and energetic woman, she is committed to preserving the uniqueness of the Holocaust, while at the same time addressing the universal questions of obedience, racism, responsibility and justice so that history will not repeat itself.

In 1979, Weitz became involved in the Facing History program through which she participates in teacher training workshops and is and active member of Hadassah's Speakers' Bureau. Weitz has taught at Salem State College in Salem, Massachusetts and, in 1981, founded the Holocaust Center of the North Shore Jewish Federation. Next month, her portrait will be hung in Boston City Hall as one of the "Women of the Century". She is a resident of Peabody, Massachusetts.

The lecture begins at 7:00 p.m. The reception will follow at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Congregation Albert office, 3800 Louisiana Blvd. NE, or by calling 505-883-1818. Tickets are $5.00 for students, $10.00 for adults and $25.00 for the reception, lecture and signed copy of her book. The lecture is a fund raiser for the 2000 Confirmation Class at Congregation to assist the class in visiting the State of Israel this summer. Weitz has generously agreed to pledge all proceeds from the event to that purpose.
