Brotherhood Breakfast - January 2000
| When: | Sunday, January 23, 2000 at 10:00 A.M. |
| Where: | Social Hall Congregation Albert |
| Guest Speakers: | Gary Cunningham, Vice President for Research at NMSU, and Stanley Kamlet, Mountain States Director of the Jewish National Fund. |
| Topic: | "The Greening of the Desert: The New Mexico Connection" |
Some of the technologies and techniques used in Israel for turning the desert green and making arid lands productive were developed at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, using research money provided by the Jewish National Fund.
Dr. Cunningham is also Associate Dean of NMSU's College of Agriculture and Home Economics, and Director of the New Mexico Agricultural Experiment Station. He has been on the board of directors of the International Arid Lands Consortium since 1990. Dr. Cunningham's teaching and research over the last 30 years has focused on the plants, ecosystems, landscapes and agricultural systems of arid lands. He will speak about how NMSU's research has benefited Israel.
Mr. Kamlet, a native of Denver, was the Executive Director of the Endowment Fund of the Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado for 22 years before taking his current position with the JNF. Under his leadership, the Endowment Fund raised $22 million for a variety of educational, cultural and human service programs. As the Mountain States director for JNF, he is responsible for serving Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. Mr. Kamlet has made nearly two dozen trips to Israel in the last three decades. He will speak about the JNF's funding of the ongoing research at NMSU, and about the important work the JNF does in Israel and on behalf of Jewish people elsewhere in the world.
The brunch, which begins at 10 a.m. in the temple social hall, costs $6 for Brotherhood members and their guests, and $8 for all others.
