"The Jews are above all historians and the Bible is essentially a historical work from start to finish."
  Paul Johnson in "History of the Jews"

In this course we will:

  1. explore what is known about who wrote the various historical books of the Bible, when they wrote, and their motives in doing so;
  2. review the big picture of over 3,000 years of human history as the Bible presents it and compare it to our modern understanding;
  3. study selected books of the Bible and seek to understand how the Jewish religion, as we know it today, developed from the pagan and superstitious environment of early Biblical times.

We will also discuss the differences and similarities between the ancient authors of the Bible's historical books and the modern secular historians who use archeological data and scientific methods to reconstruct the Hebrew past.

Our aim is to enhance appreciation of the Bible as a book that has shaped who we are as Jews, and has inspired both Christianity and Islam to define their own relationship to God - for better as well as for worse.

LUNCH & LIMUD: "PSTUDYING" PSALMS

Facilitator: Rabbi Joseph R. Black
Day/Time: Wednesday, 12 Noon
Class Dates: February 2 - March 8
Fee: Member/$10.00
Non-Member/$25.00

Bring your lunch and join the Rabbi for a discussion of Psalms. There is no book of the bible more beautiful, poetic and meaningful than Tehillim - the Psalms of David.  The 140 poems, prayers and petitions found in this work contain an exhaustive array of emotions-from joy to despair, pain to pleasure, victory to defeat. For centuries, the Psalms have provided people of many faiths with words of comfort in times of sorrow, healing in times of illness, joy in times of celebration, and solidarity in times of difficulty.  In this class we will read selected passages from the Psalms-commentaries as well as creating our own midrashim.  If time allows, we also will explore newly composed Psalms inspired by the ancient words of the Psalmist.  No prior knowledge or experience is required.  Participants should bring their own copies of the text to class.
