From the Finance Committee - December 1999
Fundraising at Congregation Albert. To some people it means, "Again, with the money!" To others it's a time to socialize, meet (and make) friends, have fun, and embrace the spiritual essence of Congregation Albert. In reality, fundraising at our temple has not been well organized nor has it garnered much money. That's changing, and it's important that we all have an appreciation and understanding of the purpose of and need for fundraising.
Fundraising income is an important piece of our budget. At least it should be. Most congregations our size generate some 7% to 10% of their income from fundraising activities. At Congregation Albert it is less than 4%. The three largest budgeted fundraising activities at Congregation Albert are the annual Kol Nidre Appeal, the golf tournament and Challah sales, in that order. Other programs include donations on behalf of Cantor Shuchat-Marx or Rabbi Black, the Memorial Book, membership directory ads, and Entertainment book sales. But, let's step back for a moment. Why do we need fundraising events in the first place?
Membership dues covers about 83% of our operating expenses. The balance comes from contributions, fundraisers and temple programs. Obviously, without these donations and fees, we would have to either raise dues or do without some services. Neither of these are very attractive options. Hence fundraising drives. However, there is no reason why we can't expect something for our contributions.
In the Kol Nidre Appeal, for example, we've tried to emphasize a special need. Last year it was the security of our building and the surrounding property. This year it was a renewed emphasis on education for all age groups. For the golf tournament, it's the opportunity to have fun (or torture yourself, depending on your skills) and to invite participation from the community at large. The monies go into the operating fund and help us to meet our collective expectations.
But we need to do more, because there is so much more to do whether it's adding computers to our religious school; ensuring that we have the right amount of staff, both educational and professional, to meet our needs; buying a new dishwasher; or sending more of our youth to Israel. Where, then, do we start? Plans are being made to enhance the fundraising efforts of our temple.
You should already be aware of our 4th Annual Golf Tournament, which is scheduled for May 2000. A dynamic and dedicated golf committee has been working since October to ensure a well organized event, and a successful money maker. An evening at the Symphony fundraiser is slated for April. These will be successful because we've started early and have the commitment of a lot of good people.
You see, while the money from fundraisers is necessary to help run the congregation, it's not just about the money. It's about active participation by temple members - people - to improve congregational life. People like you and me. All of us working to build a better Congregation Albert. Have a little fun. Find some spirituality. Get closer to God. Your participation is needed. Join a fundraising committee. Participate in our fundraising events. Do both. Call the office today (883-1818) and add your name to the list of people who are volunteering to make our fundraisers a success.
