From the Social Action Committee - November 1999
The Social Action Committee would like to encourage participation in our quarterly meetings! It is at these meetings that we discuss new projects, as well as new ways to provide support for ongoing projects. Any congregation member is welcome at our meetings. You may come to provide support, to present a new project or just to listen, or to give your input. We invite new committee members to join the core team, and we encourage everyone to contact us if you have an idea for a social action project.
The Social Action Committee would like to bring an action item to the attention of the congregation. A project called Teamworks, funded by the New Mexico Commission on the Status of Women, helps women who have been supported by welfare become employed and self-sufficient. The project needs volunteer mentors to provide support to the women who have participated in the Teamworks program and have entered the work force.
Members of the congregation who have work experience and would like to volunteer are encouraged to call Cheryl-Lani Branson ( a member of our Zamir!) for more information at sealani@aol.com.
The committee would also like to thank the many generous congregants who have given time and donations of many kinds for the Sylejmani family from Kosovo. They are extremely grateful to Congregation Albert, JFS and the many members of the Jewish community who have helped them since they arrived in Albuquerque early this summer.
If you would like to know more or to help them as they make their new life in Albuquerque, contact Judy Smith ( JChasmith@aol.com) or Paula Schwartz (amar@swcp.com).
