From the Director of Education - October 1999

The new school year is here… and what a year it promises to be! Our first day of Religious School was September 19th the day of Kol Nidre. A perfect time when we are reflecting yet looking ahead. By the time you receive this month's bulletin, it will be Simchat Torah. A Hebrew term meaning "Rejoicing of the Torah", and a day devoted to rejoicing over the Torah. Simchat Torah marks the completion of the annual cycle of the reading of the Torah and the beginning of a new cycle. I hope to see all our families along with their children to help celebrate this joyous holiday.

As we begin our new school year, the teachers have embraced the theme that I mentioned in last month's article "Learning is Great for Learning Leads to Action". I feel this theme conveys a message that all of us believe in, for all the learners at Congregation Albert, from the Early Childhood Center through our Adult Education classes. Skip Dixon has compiled an excellent selection of Adult Education courses and we look forward to seeing you here involved in becoming life long learners. If you are unable to take a class I strongly encourage the parents of children attending our Religious School and/or Hebrew School to participate in any way you can. Your presence sends a powerful message to your children. A message saying that you value the place of Jewish education. Attend family worship, join your Hebrew students at Jr. Congregation, become a "room parent", support school fund-raising, send your children on class retreats, or read a good book from our Temple library together with your child. I firmly believe that if you do any one of these things, you too will find that learning is great and it will lead to action.

B'Shalom,
Leah Schaer
