From the Cantor - October 1999

We begin and end this month with music! Please join us at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 1, as we celebrate Shabbat Simchat Torah with our customary gusto and dancing with our Sifrei Torah. The New Shtetl Band will be on hand to add freylach (joyful dance music) to our evening during and after the service. This year we want to see people from ages 2 to 102 out on the dance floor so, as Psalm 150 says, praise God with dancing bodies!

HaShirah begins rehearsals on Sunday, October 10 at 12:30. If your school age child has not already signed up for our young choir and would like to do so, please contact me!

Elsewhere in this bulletin you will find an invitation to a very special weekend October 29-31 with our Artist-in-Residence Noah Budin. Noah can best be described as a Jewish singer-storyteller with the musical influences of Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, and the captivating narrative presence of Theodore Bikel. He performs his original music around the country in concert halls, religious schools at churches and synagogues, and education workshops; and he has performed with Rabbi Joe Black and Doug Cotler. Last summer Noah Budin stirred audiences to their feet at the Coalition for Advancement of Jewish Education (CAJE) conference.

Here's what some folks have to say about Noah Budin:

"Noah Budin [is] a local treasure…I am listening to his new CD, Hallelujah Land, as I write this. It literally makes me tingle with pride at being a Jew." —Jeffrey Grover, Cleveland Jewish News

"This man is fantastic with children and adults!" Louisa Halfacre, Director, Faith Church Preschool, Lyndhurst, Ohio

"A perfect blend of the American folk tradition and the pure Jewish soul." _ Rabbi Joe Black

"Man, you're awesome!" —Joel Lurie Grishaver, Torah Aura Publications, to Noah backstage at CAJE22, Palo Alto

Noah will perform in our preschool and religious school assemblies and present special participatory music at our Shabbat services, including Junior Congregation. Our weekend's highlight will be a very special concert for all ages on Saturday night, October 30 at 7:00 p.m. in our Sanctuary. I promise you that your heart will grow wings when you listen to Noah Budin and when you meet him. Please join me for this extraordinary, soul-lifting weekend.

B'shalom u-v'shir,
Cantor Jacqueline L. Shuchat-Marx
