TASTY - September 1999

TASTY started off the summer as counselors at Camp Swift, run by SWFTY for underprivileged inner-city Phoenix kids. SWFTYites work all year to raise money for this program. We earned part of this money by running Purim carnival games, so thanks for playing. Camp was a complete success and everyone had a fabulous time despite abnormally cold temperatures including nights below freezing! We're talking being cold —wearing jeans, t-shirts and two sweatshirts. Counselors and campers alike enjoyed canoeing, hiking, value programs, art, music, a ropes course and many other activities. We loved the carnival, and had fun participating in the talent show. For the majority of the campers, it was their first time away from the comfort and familiarity of home, so the counselors also learned how to deal with homesickness, fights, and sick campers. Though many campers missed home a lot, almost all boarded the buses for home with tears in their eyes because they didn't want to leave. Meanwhile, the counselors, exhausted from an activity-packed and crazed week, were eager for next summer to arrive and a chance to return to camp.

Once home, three TASTYites anxiously prepared for their six week trip to Israel, another three went to experience the joys of UAHC summer camp, and others started packing to go to college. Even with all this activity, we still made sure to help out where needed. Our main TASTY summer activity involved a car wash sponsored by BBYO and USY to raise money for rebuilding the bombed synagogues in Sacramento. It was a big success, raising over $200 to send to California.

Watch for TASTY's third annual Yom Kippur food drive. Our past two were great, but we would like to encourage everyone to contribute, so this year's can be our biggest yet! Remember: don't just fast for Yom Kippur; give the food so others may eat.

TASTY is open to all high school students, and we thoroughly encourage all of you to come to at least one event and see why all its members love it so much! If we haven't already contacted you or if you would like more information, please call Maggie Newman, Adam Schaer, Becca Orchant or our advisor, Robin Sena.
