From TASTY - April 1999
NFTY Convention 99 was an amazing experience! Five TASTY members joined 1500 Reform Jewish high school students in one hotel! We began the weekend with Shabbat dinner and a service filled with music. Listening to all the voices was inspirational and an indication of what the rest of the weekend would be like. Following services was a slide show of how NFTY has progressed during its 60 years of existence. Following Saturday morning services, we split up for Torah study, regional meetings, and workshops focusing on ethics. After dinner and Havdalah, we danced to Doug Cotler with Julie Silver and Yom Hadash. Sunday morning began with workshops on topics such as human rights and the death penalty. That afternoon, we toured Los Angeles and visited the Skirball museum. Presentations about NFTY in Israel and UAHC Kutz Camp convinced us to make our summer plans soon! Monday, we began our morning with Marta Kauffman, writer and director of "Friends", discussing "A Jewish Mother in Hollywood". Then, we went to more workshops on Jewish life and ethical decisions. Our final night was a private party at Universal Studios with all of our new friends from around the country. The next morning, exhausted, we left for home.
TASTY would like to take this opportunity to thank the Sisterhood and Brotherhood for their donations so that more TASTY members may participate in activities like this. Thanks to all of you who helped send us to the Convention by buying calendars and popcorn and to all of you who helped at the Purim carnival. We would not have been able to attend NFTY Convention 99 without your help!
