What is a Mitzvah?

Mitzvah is a word that is often mis-translated as "good deed."
Mitzvah means "commandment."
Our tradition teaches that there are 613 Mitzvot in the Torah.
Performing a Mitzvah is more than simply doing "good".
Mitzvot allows us to see ourselves as actively engaging in the process of working in partnership with God. Any Mitzvah can be a transforming experience because they help us to see that all of our actions have the potential for holiness.

Mitzvah Day

Our second annual Mitzvah Day is almost here! Scheduled for Sunday, May 2, 1999, this community service outreach day will see many of us volunteering to perform "mitzvot" in our larger community. All ages, from our Sunday school children, to our teens, adults and seniors will join together to work on a variety of community service projects to improve our city.

Last year over 250 congregants volunteered their time and services on this day. We hope this year will bring together even more people. Mitzvah Day volunteers will also be honored at a special oneg shabbat scheduled for Friday, June 11th, 1999.

This year’s agency activities will also include an activity level to give a better idea of the range of exertion. Activity levels will range from sedentary to moderate and also include moderate with possible lifting. We hope this will help you better select the proper activity based on individual needs.

Many of the same agencies will be featured, plus some new ones including the Women’s Housing Coalition, UNM Children’s Hospital, Project Share, Peanut Butter and Jelly, the City of Albuquerque Office of Senior Affairs and the City’s Keep Albuquerque Beautiful Program. Hopefully, you will have already received a Mitzvah Day brochure and registration form in the mail. Additional registration materials can be picked up at the Temple office or you can click here to register on-line. Please also make certain you register as soon as possible, hopefully not later than April 16th for priority choices. We look forward to a wonderful day that we can all be very proud of…see you on May 2nd!!!
