Sisterhood News - February 1999
Purim is celebrated on the 14th day of Adar, which coincides with Monday, March l in 1999. The name Purim comes from the Persian word pur, which means lot. Haman, King Ahasuerus wicked minister, persuaded the king to destroy all the Jews in his kingdom. Lots had been drawn to fix a day for the massacre of the Jews of Persia (now Iran). Esther, the beautiful Jewish queen, pleaded with King Ahasuerus and saved her people.
Sunday, February 28, is Sisterhoods annual Purim Carnival. Last year the Purim Carnival earned $3,850 for Sisterhood. Lets try to beat that figure for l999! Pat Byhoff, Chairperson, together with Judith Jennings and their committee, have been working for the past two months to make this event a success. Dont forget to bring any white elephants to the Temple at any time, or call Judith if you need a pickup. Judith will also have more than 200 titles of old-time sheet music for sale. You can call her for the titles and she will make anyone copies of music. We also need baked goods, especially hamantaschens. You can leave these in the temple freezer or call Janice Gordon.
Hope to see all of you there! Sisterhoods Nominating Committee has been working hard to come up with a slate of officers for 1999-2000. They will make their recommendations at the next Board meeting and the election will take place at the regular March general meeting.
Membership is up to almost two hundred and still going strong. If you havent sent in your check for this year, do it now! You can send your $30 annual dues plus your $36 optional donor to Sisterhood at the Temple. The Donor Luncheon is Thursday, May 13th and our chairpersons, Jane Thompson and Fran Liberman, are busy with exciting plans.
In January, the Congregation kitchen was professionally cleaned through the sponsorship of Sisterhood. We ask everyones cooperation in maintaining the cleanliness of our kitchen.
Remember the Sisterhood Tribute Fund. Send your $4.00 check to Ilsa Clausner for any special tribute and she will promptly send out a card to the recipient.
Hope to see all of you at the February 8th Sisterhood luncheon, featuring Dr. Barry Ramo speaking on "Anger and Your Health".
BShalom,
Henri Courtnage, President
